Harvey Quaytman

Press Release
August 11, 2000

HARVEY QUAYTMAN will show paintings and drawings from 1996-1998 at the MCKEE GALLERY, 745 Fifth Avenue New York. The exhibition will open on Thursday, September 7, with a reception for the artist 6-8 pm, and will continue through Saturday, October 21.

In an exhibition combining square paintings and shaped canvases, Quaytman explores the tension existing between variously intersecting lines, while his characteristic use of intense color adds a voluptuous richness to the contrasting forms and surfaces. Almost inevitably, Quaytman returns to an earlier fascination in his career with the shaped canvas by eliminating the four corner areas of the square, revealing an exquisite understanding of proportion and scale and reducing the canvas to its elemental cruciform structure.

With innate confidence, Quaytman plays and flirts with the eye, taking the viewer into new and richer territory of the constructivists; a sensualist, advancing in his own original way the dry rigorousness of minimalism.

Quaytman was born in 1937 and lives in New York City. He has exhibited world wide since the late Sixties.
